Kindergarten

Welcome to Kindergarten. Here at Red Jacket, we offer a full-day kindergarten program that helps to foster the positive, social, and emotional well-being of your child.  Early on, we establish school and classroom routines in an effort to reach our academic goals. Your child will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and creative learning opportunities which include three to four field trips each year.

We build a language-rich atmosphere to encourage all students to recognize letters and sounds. Students begin to understand how letters and sounds work together to eventually form words. These words will then turn into meaningful sentences, both in reading and writing. Students will be introduced to a number of reading strategies that will help develop early literacy behaviors in an effort to become an early reader. Your child will foster a love of reading and writing through small group reading instruction, interactive read alouds, and daily writing activities. Kindergarten students will be exposed to a variety of literature, including, but not limited to fiction, non-fiction, poems, and fairy tales.

We use a hands-on manipulative-based approach to teaching numbers, number sense, counting, addition, and subtraction. Students will be introduced to math through both whole and small group instruction.

Science helps us explore the world around us. During the year, your child will be introduced to the following science topics:

  • Plant and Animal Needs
  • Reducing Human Impact
  • Weather Conditions
  • Measurement of Weather
  • Weather Hazards
  • Habitats
  • Organisms’ Impact on Environments
  • Uses of Natural Resources
  • Pushes & Pulls
  • Speed & Direction
  • Energy from the Sun

Social Studies introduces students to holidays and significant historical figures. Kindergarteners will touch on an array of topics including: knowing their address and phone number; knowing family member's names; and understanding directions such as up, down, left, and right.  We also begin to understand the difference between needs and wants, and how to follow school expectations.

Kindergarten is a fun, unique, and exciting year. We look forward to being a part of your child’s first experience at Red Jacket. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific volunteer opportunities.
