First Grade

First Graders are Excited to Learn

Welcome to first grade!  This will be an exciting year filled with learning about the following topics:

Reading Literature

* Identify parts of a story - characters, setting, and plot

* Retell stories with key points

* Read informational text

* Distinguish text features

* Identify key topic and details

* Read Foundational Skill

* Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words

* Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension

* Write opinion, informative/explanatory poems, and narrative pieces

* Speaking and Listening

* Participate in collaborative conversations while asking and answering questions

Language Standards

* Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking

Math -

Operation and Algebraic Thinking

* Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction

* Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction

* Add and subtract within 20

* Work with addition and subtraction equations

Number and Operations in Base Ten

* Extend the counting sequence

* Understand place value

* Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract

* Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units

* Tell and write time and money

* Reason with shapes and their attributes

* Tell and write time to the hour and half hour
